A great number of specialists from all over the world try to build a career abroad and especially in a more economically developed country like Germany. Limits on migration from new EU members were made stricter in Germany after the year 2000 and lasted longer than in any other developed country in the EU.
For many years immigrants in Germany found it difficult to climb the socio-economic ladder. Nowadays, however, there are clear signs showing that a shift has occurred in the attitude of the country toward immigrants seeking career growth on its territory.
On one hand, the reason for this is the demographic situation in Germany and the shortage of specialists in certain professions (like the medical assisting jobs and medical officer jobs). Recently unemployment in the country has been at its lowest level since the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990 and it is expected that by 2025 there will be a shortage of 5.4 million skilled workers despite the measures taken in order to mobilize women and older people.
On the other hand, the reason for the new attitude of Germany toward immigration is the better integration of the new wave of immigrants in the country which is due to the fact that most of these people are highly educated Europeans who have a good knowledge of English and German languages.
Now is the right moment for doctors to seek professional development in Germany if this has been their dream. In an interview for the site https://www.study-in.de the vice president of the German Medical Association (Bundesärztekammer - BÄK) Dr Martina Weber speaks about the favorable conditions for foreign doctors to build a career in Germany:
“The demographic development has long since caught up with the medical profession, too. In the meantime only about one in six working doctors is under the age of 35; the large proportion of colleagues aged over 50 (some 56 percent) and over 60 (some 16 percent) is growing constantly. Many of them will be unable to find successors in the future if the current conditions do not change soon. In the hospitals almost 20,000 senior physicians and consultants will retire in the next ten years. So the shortage of doctors is going to intensify.”
In the interview Dr Martina Weber emphasizes on the fact that foreign doctors are welcome in the country. The openness of Germany toward immigrants with medical education is obvious as during the period 2000-2009 the annual immigration rate of doctors rose from 2.5% to 7.7%. In 2009 more than 1 900 doctors from foreign countries started work in Germany. This trend is expected to continue in the future.
